The Kalgoorlie Super Pit

The largest open cut gold mine in Australia and bordering (literally) the goldfields town of Kalgoorlie, the Super Pit is deeper than the city of Perth skyscrapers are tall. If you think about that for a moment, it’s astounding. Any of our skyscrapers could be built at the bottom of the pit and the top floor would still be a basement.

Public viewing platforms open, and are moved around as the pit progresses, allowing visitors to gaze down the mighty hole in the ground. Many West Australians work on similar mine sites, but for the rest of us, this is the best opportunity to get a look into a major mining operation.

I have been visiting Kalgoorlie for the last decade, these are some of the photos I have taken here.
